Narrative
HOOD RIVER COUNTY, OR – A crash between an ambulance and a disabled passenger vehicle early Friday, July 19, near east Cascade Locks claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman.
The fatal incident unfolded on the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 near milepost 54, east of Lindsey Creek. Oregon State Police responded to the area just before 1:00 a.m.
Officials arrived on the scene to learn that a 42-year-old woman from Benton City, Washington, was operating an AMR ambulance westbound on I-84. At one point, the ambulance veered out of its lane and struck a Chevrolet Camaro, which was at rest on the side of the roadway with a flat tire.
The victim, a Portland resident who was outside of the car at the time of the collision, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No injuries to the driver of the ambulance or its two passengers, one of whom was a patient, were reported.
A span of I-84 experienced delays for nearly four hours during the response and investigation. An investigation remains in progress, and no charges have been reported at this time.
